Robert Ruark Safari Hunting
Filmed in 1954. Narrated and featuring Robert Ruark. Harry Selby and Andrew Holberg guide Ruark to a 110 pound elephant. Black rhino, leopard, and a huge 49 inch buffalo are taken as well as other species. This is a chance to see what a safari in British East Africa was like during this era.
One of the best books he wrote that got many the passion for the bush. Awful shame they kicked him out of East Africa for just telling thruth about what went on there.
Was it common for people to believe these were "staged" or something?
Very interesting to find this, not as enjoyable as his books, but entertaining nevertheless.
I loved the book Horn of the Hunter it was like I was there . Good little movie people these days don’t get tree month long safari. To damn many people in the Dark continent these days .
I first read "The Horn of the Hunter" 25 years ago and haven’t stopped re-reading it every couple of years. Same with Use Enough Gun. The writing is so fine, it is like you are actually there. Now with this documentary, I AM THERE! Thank you for sharing this
thank you.robert ruark has been my hero since i was a small boy umpteen years ago. i grew up on "the old man and the boy" and "the old man’s boy grows older" and many of his other books.they were among the first books i ever read.
You must remember this film was made to promote Africa as a hunting destination not a wildlife nature documentary.
Without sport hunting, African game will not survive.
Yeah, everybody screaming RACIST can suck my cock and eat a sack of festered foreskins. Sit quietly and eat your tendies and burgers and pretend you haven’t personally eaten thousands of pounds of dead animal flesh. At least these men had the integrity to kill what they ate and fucking revel in it. Jesus people, stop being ashamed to eat. Everything does it.
That’s my rant. Now fuck off.
A ‘110 pound elephant’, that I have to see!
44:46 its hard work climbing especially if you’re carrying 2 12 packs
Do you have any more old hunting safari videos like this? I’d love to see some of Capstick’s stuff
*Hunting Bad!* Gimme a steak, medium rare, with fries and cole slaw. (Takes a big bite of steak and points across the table with his fork) *Hunting Bad!*
3 month safari-damn! Good stuff.
Maybe the best safari writer, his book "horn of the hunter " is very wellwriten
I recall reading his stories of the Mau Mau, and the little ditty the kids sang back then, I got a skinned cat, and I truly love that, but Ma Ma won’t buy me a Mau Mau
This was fantastic, really old-school… Loved it!
A safari has been on my bucket list since I was a teenager. At some point, I’m gonna have to get ’round tuit!
Thanks for sharing!
Fantastic!!!
This is a sad movie.
I enjoyed the safari part of it. Great to see my country during that era. However I’m very much against the hunting part.
read the honey badger 20 years ago just decided to research now and here i am
What a great movie.
That would have been a fantastic
hunting trip to be on.
Hopefully we’ll see more similar
movies posted.
Thanks for sharing this one
The audio book, African Safari Guides, The White Hunters is awesome to,,,,, such great stories
A friend of mine lived in East Africa after Mau-Mau and was told all Ruark did was sit on the hotel veranda with a drink in his hand .
Very interesting document of the time with some fascinating scenes of African traditional dancing… But of course, Ruark film primarily is about Ruark. Conversely, Jim Corbett started filming animals in the 1930s, and the only stars of his films were the animals. Sadly, Corbett was so modest, that we do not even have a footage of Corbett himself… That’s the difference between Ruark and Corbett.
Wow. Now let’s see Papa’s safari please.
Great vid. Love Ruark’s writing style. The man lived large.
Close as I’ll get to "safari" is 5ish months in the winter woods of NC.
And that’s just fine. d:^)
I read all of his books, in High School during he early eighties…and did book reports on them. Not one teacher even knew who he was..ignorant swine. I truly loved "Something of Value" and made my kids read it instead of the garbage the schools make them read now.
I would have thought hunting would have been the in thing after teddy roosevelt.
As a boy we camped in tents in the rain there. Miserable.
Our countries are beautiful 🇹🇿
This is stunning.
Excelente material., leí cuando niño el cuerno del cazador, y me imaginé los sucesos, pero ahora veo a los personajes tal como fueron, gracias por subirlo, un saludo desde Chile.
Ruark is one of the finest writers this country has produced. Thankfully he lent himself to Africa and a lost epoch is preserved masterfully.
This is really great film, I just wish I would’ve had the chance to be on a real Safari with one of them wonderful double barrel rifles!!!! 💯😍😍😍
I found myself watching the whole thing
Epic
This man was a fantastic writer, but a good narrator also!
Ruark…excellent writer with a reputation of stealing the kills of others as his own. In the shooting towards the end of the old video, preening himself
Ruark did not pay attention to his own title ‘use enough gun’ and hit the right spot. Breaking shoulders is not a ‘kill’. I wasn’t impressed. His better
writing, btw, was UHURU.
Loved it! Thanks for posting.
"It’s the dead ones that get up and kill you."
There are old hunters and there are bold hunters. There are no old, bold hunters. Use enough gun and use it well. A last, well placed shot into a seemingly dead animal is far better and cheaper life insurance than anything issued by Lloyds of London. And Lloyds only pays off if you’re dead.
Bravo 👏
If you like Roark try Peter Hathaway Capstick.
I did it 50 years ago. One of the last tent safaris in Kenya This brings back some very pleasant memories for an old man.
By the way within five minutes of a shot there will be plenty of people to use the meat so nothing goes to waste.
