Steve Makes the Team: Kentucky Small Game | S6E09 | MeatEater

Kevin Murphy and his band of Kentucky small game hunters introduce Steve to the finest Kentucky has to offer. Gray squirrels with tree hounds and cottontails with beagles, in Kentucky, it’s the dogs that do the hunting. Cathead biscuits, sawmill gravy, and fried small game round out the Kentucky adventure.

I thought he was gonna say the only way to go after squirrels is to become a squirrel yourself. But no, it was the thing about the dog, which does make sense.

I agree Steve. I love squirrel. My Dad did not like to eat it but he loved to hunt them. So when we went squirrel hunting he always ate some just to show us kids that if you shoot it, you eat it. If you don’t eat it, don’t shoot it.

    Steve,

Ask Mr. Kevin Murphy about getting you in connection with using a air rifle that is readily available from Joe Keith owner of Kentucky Regulators Gun Club and gun shop. Wholeheartedly believe itd Be a great opportunity for a great team to all get together and have some fun

Love this episode but those don’t look like any swampers I ever seen. The ones I’ve hunted are a dark brown with short ears and web feet. Some run a long ways but others only hop in a small circle often running logs and swimming creeks

I squirrel hunted once or twice as a child, didn’t get into hunting as an adult until I was almost 30 years old. My 11 year old son has already gotten the bug and as our deer season closed yesterday, with just 2 tags left (I only the pulled the trigger on one deer in the last 2 seasons, at this point I’m just a driver and lookout 😎). Two weeks from yesterday my son and I are going on out first squirrel hunt as father and son as we both learn to be squirrel hunters, together, and for the rest of our lives. Thank you for what you do Steve, and everyone you feature in your episodes. It truly is a treasured tradition and lifestyle that I hope my son enjoys with his grandchildren long after I’m gone.

  40. John Hutchinson on January 27, 2023 at 5:06 am

Great limb rat hunting. Nothing better than a well trained dog and my daddy and grandpa could train a dog so well that he or she would only run or tree whatever they was trained to do. I had a puppy and he was 8 weeks old when my daddy took him on his first squirrel hunt. Daddy would sit along the way and let the dog watch the squirrel and naturally the dog or dogs wouldn’t be fed the night before because they would get rewarded with certain parts of the inners. But daddy killed eight squirrels that day and just put the inners next to the bottom of the tree where the squirrel was shot. But wolf, my puppys name didn’t make it back home till the next day. Daddy never had to train that pup again. Wolf took to it like he’d been hunting squirrels for years. But that weekend we didn’t feed him and that morning he was sitting at the front door with his tail wagging. We took off to turkey creek over in Silas Alabama where I grew up but my dad was born there and my great grandfather was given any two counties of land he wanted when the war was over. He picked Clark and Choctaw county. But we killed 16 squirrels that morning between our house and grandpas three miles away. Wolf always ran a big circle out in front and he bark twice when he found a fresh scent and he would blow up barking when he found the squirrel. He loved fresh liver lungs and heart and kidneys and leave the rest. After daddy was murdered in 68 that’s the last I ever seen of my dog and all my daddy’s guns and my new long Tom 12 gauge 3 inch magnum single shot my grandpa bought me. I was 11. That’s one reason I love your show so much it reminds me of all the times daddy took me hunting and taught me most everything I know now except for a few great things I’ve picked up on my own along the way. Thanks for bringing back all my great memories of me and my daddy,, and best friend. Thanks so much.

I just love this show, especially this episode. Everyone has small game hunting stories from their youth. It’s just plain American. And that meal with home brew at the end was divine.
